Independent Student Research Opportunities

Upper-level undergraduate and graduate students are welcome to conduct independent research projects using objects in the Archaeological Museum collection.

To begin a project, students must:

  • Secure the support of one or more faculty advisors
  • Allow adequate time—typically at least one year
  • Submit a written proposal

Research proposals will be evaluated based on the quality and clarity of the proposal and the availability of museum staff to assist with access to the collection and records.

To learn more about the types of objects available, visit the Collection page.

Role of the Museum

Museum staff can:

  • Provide access to objects in the collection
  • Share provenance and collection information
  • Offer technical assistance during museum visits

However, museum staff do not supervise or advise student research projects. Students must seek approval from a faculty member who will serve as the primary advisor for the project.

Research Proposal

Students must submit a well-developed project proposal by the end of the first month of the semester before the project will begin—for example, proposals for a Spring semester start are due by September 30 of the previous Fall semester.

Early submission is strongly encouraged.

Your proposal must include:

  • A description of the proposed research, including why direct work with ancient objects is necessary
  • A bibliography
  • A timeline for the project
  • Written approval from a faculty member in a relevant department (e.g., Near Eastern Studies, Museums and Society, Materials Science & Engineering, etc.) who agrees to be the primary supervisor
  • A list of what support is expected from museum staff, such as:
    • Access to objects and provenance records
    • Training in or supervision during object handling and/or technical analysis
  • A list of any museum supplies or equipment needed
  • A description of the planned final product (e.g., a publication, exhibit drawer, website element, or public presentation)

Please email your completed proposal package to Dr. Meg Swaney at [email protected].
