The museum is wheelchair accessible, but our historic building is unfortunately rather difficult to navigate. Please call us at 410-516-0383 during visiting hours if you need assistance getting to us.

Parking and Navigation

Parking for people with disability hang tags is available directly behind Gilman Hall (to the west of the building) next to the Greenhouse (marked as building #33 on the campus map). There is a ramp across the street from the parking lot which takes you to the ground floor entrance to Gilman Hall (look for the door to the left of the winding white marble stairs).

One you enter the building, take an immediate left and continue down the long hallway until it ends. Make another left to find an elevator on the left side. Take the elevator to the first floor. Once you exit, make a left until the end of the hall, and then another left. You will then see the front door of the museum on your left. The entrance is 70 in wide with both doors open and 35 in wide with one door open.

Touch Plates

The front door of the museum does not have touch plates, but a museum staff member can assist with opening the door. There are touch plates to access the hallways containing the exterior display cases.

Storage Cubbies

Once you enter the museum, we ask that you place any personal belongings (i.e., backpacks, large bags, coats, umbrellas, and portfolios) in the museum cubbies located at the back of the interior museum space. The doorway to the cubby-room remains open and is 34.5 in wide. Each cubby is 21.5 inches tall. There are eight cubbies currently accessible below 3 ft. Shelves forming the cubbies can be adjusted as needed to create larger storage space.

Chairs

There are wooden, armless chairs with backs available throughout the space. The seat height for these chairs is 17 in from the ground.

There are also armless chairs with wheels. The seat height for these chairs is adjustable.

Exhibits

Label Height

The exhibit display cases generally feature two labels. The height of the introductory label is approximately 7 ft from the ground. The height of the deck label is approximately 3 ft from the ground.

Large-Print Guides

Large-print guides for the permanent exhibit are available in both digital and print formats. You can access the digital version by scanning the QR code on the outside of each display case. Printed copies are also available inside the museum and in the stands located at the ends of each exterior corridor. If you need help finding a large-print exhibit guide, please ask a museum staff member for assistance.

Drawers

The interior of the museum features bays of drawers around its perimeter that contain special exhibits. The heights of the drawers from the ground are:

  • Top Drawer: 23 in
  • Middle Drawer: 18.5 in
  • Bottom Drawer: 12 in
